The winning projects from FLAME’s second Open Call have now started their trials, which also means they can take advantage of the services our Mentors are offering!
The FLAME Mentors provide a first line of support for the experimenters and replicators. They are experts in their fields and in the FLAME concepts and technologies. But more than that, they take a personal interest in the success of the experiment that they mentor.
Meet the FLAME Mentors below…
Dr. Stephen Phillips is a Principal Research Engineer and coordinates the open call projects at the IT Innovation Centre.
He is keen on driving innovation to solve complex problems but maintaining excellent user experience across many domains. He is a PRINCE2 practitioner and experienced in all aspects of software development, modelling, optimisation and statistics.
Dr. Phillips will mentor the SmartMEC project.
Prof. Michael Boniface is the Head of the IT Innovation Centre, Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton and the Project Coordinator of FLAME project.
He has an international reputation as thought leader pioneering the evolution of information technologies for tackling important business and societal challenges and long term interests in the areas of user experience, interactive media, service-based systems, software defined infrastructures and digital innovation.
Prof. Boniface will co-mentor with Dr. Phillips the SmartMEC project.
Mr. Tomas Aliaga is a Senior Software Developer working at Martel Innovate.
He is a passionate Software Engineer with a wide experience in software development and R&D projects. He holds a MSc degree in Computing Systems and his main areas of interests include Algorithms, Linux and Distributed Systems applied on Industrial and Scientific applications.
Mr. Aliaga will be the mentor of ARENA project.
Dr. Fabio Zünd is the Managing Director at the ETH Game Technology Center (GTC).
During his PhD at ETH Zurich and Disney Research Zurich, Switzerland, his research focused on game technology, augmented reality, and digital storytelling. In 2016, he co-founded the GTC together with Prof. Bob Sumner with the vision to advance the state of the art in game technology and to apply gamification to disciplines such as learning, citizen science, and human behavior.
Dr. Zünd will co-mentor with Mr. Aliaga the ARENA project.
Mr. Navid Solhjoo (MSc) is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol High Performance Networks.
He has 13 years of industrial and operational experience in radio and recently cloud engineering in Nokia UK, and prior to that software development. He completed the second ever ETSI PoC for Multi-Access Edge Computing in Wembley Stadium, London.
He joined HPN in 2019 to pursue research and engineering work on SDN and Virtualisation.
Mr. Solhjoo will be the mentor for IMRA project.
Dr. Hamid Falaki is the Telecommunication Consultant to Smart Internet Lab as part of the University of Bristol.
He has been an adviser and consultant in Wireless Communications with more than 20+ years’ experience in the telecoms technology sector, and currently is responsible for the delivery, operation and technology refresh for the University’s 5GUK test network to enable experimentation, research and development of the future communications solutions.
Dr. Falaki will co-mentor with Mr. Solhjoo IMRA project.
Carolina Fernández works at i2CAT Foundation as an R&D engineer on Horizon 2020-funded projects.
Her research efforts focus on the softwarisation of the network and the different network functions via the SDN and NFV paradigms. Such efforts translate into collaborations that produce virtualized platforms for network operators, service providers and end-users and which are able to increase the degree of automation and intelligence at the platform side, and the simplicity at the end-user side.
Carolina will be the mentor for MoDash project.
Mr. Mariano Lamarca works in Municipal Institute of Information Technology (IMI) since 2007 as Infrastructures Manager and drive several projects in Wireless, Sensoring and Smart Cities.
He is member of UNE CTN178 Committee (Smart Cities WG) and he has collaborated in several Standardization Bodies as Spain Delegation.
He has wide experience in the telecoms sector (CATV, Wireless, IOT,…). He represent Barcelona City Council as Outdoor Project Manager in several H2020 Projects (5GCITY, FLAME,…).
Mr. Lamarca will be the mentor for DIGI-HI project.
Dr. Sebastian Robitzsch is with InterDigital Europe, Ltd. working as a senior staff engineer.
His research efforts focus on the softwarisation of network functions following existing SDN and NFV paradigms in order to allow a decoupling of infrastructure, service and content providers for more versatile and programmable communication networks over innovative communication systems.
Dr. Robitzsch will be the mentor for EDGE-UCATE and PRIS replicators projects.
